Advertisement details

The NEV Auto Industry of Pakistan has issued an urgent appeal to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for immediate notification and implementation of the approved Auto Policy 2026–31 and issuance of the requisite Statutory Regulatory Orders (SROs).

The appeal also names Mr. Haroon Akhtar Khan, Adviser to the Prime Minister, and Mr. Awais Leghari, Power Minister. It warns that four months of delays in policy notification have created uncertainty and challenges for the local auto industry, placing the new energy vehicle (NEV) sector at risk.

According to the appeal, Pakistan spends approximately US$16 billion annually on petroleum imports. Accelerating NEV adoption could generate substantial foreign exchange savings, with 30% adoption potentially saving billions of dollars over five years.

The industry reports that delays have stalled consumer demand, disrupted completely knocked-down (CKD) shipments and production, and increased demurrage costs, putting investment and thousands of jobs at risk.

The appeal urges the Prime Minister to place Pakistan’s national economic interests above vested interests that may obstruct NEV adoption. It calls for timely intervention to protect foreign exchange, safeguard billions in investment and thousands of jobs, strengthen energy security, revive local manufacturing, and accelerate Pakistan’s transition towards NEVs. The industry warns that any further delay will irreparably damage Pakistan’s NEV auto industry.
